Motor Truck Cargo Insurance

Did you know?

Motor Truck Cargo insurance protects the transporter for his responsibility in the event of damaged or lost freight. The policy is purchased with a maximum load limit per vehicle. Normal coverage limits can range from $10,000 to $100,000 with increased limits upon request. Pricing for this insurance is mainly dependent on the type of cargo being hauled.

Carriers of cargo are legally liable for the property transported in their vehicles while in their care, custody, and control.

Legal Liability Coverage: "We" cover "your" legal liability for loss to property of others:

  1. while under "your care, custody, and control; and
  2. that " you" become legally obligated to pay a common or contract carrier under a bill of lading, contract of carriage, or shipping receipt that is issued by "you" or that is issued on "your behalf.

What's Covered?

Motor Truck Cargo insures against the risks of direct physical loss to covered property except as specifically excluded. Cargo insurance covers the property while in transit, loading or unloading.

What Affect the Cost to the policy?

The type of commodity being transported significantly affects the premium. High valued goods will carry a higher rate than low cost commodities. Geography can also impact the premium. If the goods are being transported to or through higher risk regions, such as major metropolitan areas, a surcharge is often applied to the rating structure. Selecting a larger deductible can lower the premium.

Who Should Carry This Coverage?

The trucking company having FHWA (ICC) Authority.
